I'm gradually updating my background information in preparation for my research. Here is a photo of the Orlando Sunland Center. It's my understanding that both the Orlando and Tallahassee sites have been razed. However, I have also learned that the Marianna facility is still open and there have been some recent management controversies. It will be very informative to study these and get a better understanding of the challenges that these institutions continue to face.
These large residential facilities have been in the news again recently. Noah's Landing is a planned facility in the Orlando area. However, legislative limits on location and size of housing for persons with disabilities is impeding the expansion of this and other facilities. Controversies exist surrounding the unanswered questions about isolation and segregation of these citizens versus creating a community of those with similar needs. What can we learn that will broaden our understanding of this?
